Each spring, as their classmates head off to the beaches, there are a select few college students that choose to spend their school break giving back to the community. Coastal Habitat for Humanity was lucky to host some of these extraordinary students this year. Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge is a year-round alternative break program giving college students the chance to connect with other students, learn new skills and, of course, make a difference.
Students from across the northeast traveled to the Jersey Shore to help families that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Having almost no experience, teams learned how to do everything from installing kitchen cabinets to constructing walls for a brand new home. "This is my third spring break volunteering somewhere. I have never heard from another student that they didn't love or learn from their experience." shared Kelli O'Dell, from Albright College.

Women Build 2014
On May 10th, Coastal Habitat for Humanity Women Build volunteers, with support from Lowes Home Improvement, joined together to work on The Missionaries of Charity property in Asbury Park. These 23 volunteers were part of the National Women Build Day, which takes place across the nation and brings together women of all walks of life to improve our communities.
"Women Build is a day for women to get together, empower each other and work as a team," said Barbara Macera, Women Build Committee Chair. "We have fun and at the end of the day, have made a long-lasting impact."
Materials for this project were generously donated by Lowe's Home Improvement in Howell, NJ. Other supporters of this event included Gill Berry & Associates and Theo's Property Management.

Once again, The New Jersey Bankers Association has joined forces with Coastal Habitat for Humanity for their 2014 Bankers Build. The 13 week Bankers Build kicked off on June 19th at Volunteer Park in Neptune Township, where the groups will be repairing and rebuilding homes. Amboy Bank was the first of 17 banks that will collectively volunteer over 1500 hours of their time.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Coastal Habitat for Humanity shifted its focus in order to address the urgent need of recovery assistance for our neighbors. While we are still, and will be for the coming years, committed to the recovery efforts our mission remains constant - repairing and building affordable, safe, and energy-efficient housing. With the help of our Home Preservation Team Leaders and volunteer groups, we have started work on programs such as A Brush with Kindness and plan to complete numerous projects throughout the summer.
Our first project this year, which took place on June 7th, was funded and completed by St. Paul's Church in Ocean Grove. Volunteers made repairs to the home of a previous recipient, Ms. Fowler. Ms. Fowler is wheelchair bound and required accessibility upgrades including grab bars and assistance in cleaning up the outside of the home.
Ms. Fowler is just one of many homeowners in need of our assistance. Our Home Preservation teams hope to continue helping homeowners and can only do so with the help of donors and volunteers.
