Home Builds

Habitat for Humanity International builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of carefully selected and screened families. The houses are affordable due to donations and volunteer labor. In addition to investing a down payment and paying a no-interest mortgage, homeowners must invest 250 hours of their own labor, “sweat equity”, into their Habitat house and the houses of others.

Coastal Habitat for Humanity, Inc., is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. In the United States and Canada, there are over 1,600 affiliates and another 300 overseas–in Africa, India, Eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Central America, and South America.

Coastal Habitat for Humanity was incorporated in Asbury Park in 1994 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) by a group of 13 people including clergy, representing eight Monmouth County towns, who were concerned with the need for decent, affordable housing for families in the shore area.

The goal of our affiliate is to raise awareness for the acute need for affordable housing in such a way the poverty housing and homelessness become socially, politically, and religiously unacceptable throughout the world.

The first home, completed in December of 1997, sold with an interest free loan to a family who had met the requirements of need, ability to pay and completion of “sweat equity” hours.

Our local affiliate also supports builds around the world by pledging to contribute ten percent of all non-restricted donations. Coastal Habitat’s commitment, combined with the inexpensive construction costs in impoverished countries, has resulted in the funding of eight new homes. We have also partnered with Kenyan and Honduran affiliates by committing to fund construction of an additional six homes in those countries.
