Volunteers raise walls on house that will replace Sandy-damaged original

LAKE COMO — One borough family is another step closer to reclaiming their home, thanks to Coastal Habitat for Humanity.
On Saturday, May 9, volunteers from Coastal Habitat for Humanity participated in the 10th Annual Women Build, beginning to frame the Parkway home of the Taylor family.
Dawn Taylor's home that she shared with her husband Jerry Jr., where she raised her two children, Jerry III, 18, and Aubrey, 15, was damaged during Hurricane Sandy. Close to three feet of water flooded Ms. Taylor's one-story bungalow, rising to the counters and covering the beds.
Ms. Taylor and her family have been staying with family in Brick Township since their house was deemed uninhabitable after the hurricane.
The Taylors' home was demolished after Sandy and is being rebuilt in its original footprint, but Ms. Taylor said the layout will be slightly different.
According to Coastal Habitat for Humanity Resource Development Manager Stacy Vasta, close to 40 women and men came out to help rebuild Ms. Taylor's house.
"We have some councilmen from Lake Como and the mayor stopped by," Ms. Vasta said. "It was a great turnout."
According to Ms. Vasta, the volunteers were working on building the first wall of the house and raising it.
She said the work will continue through the summer and the house will be completed in "a few months."
Ms. Vasta said many of the volunteers were Ms. Taylor's neighbors and community members, but there were also volunteers from all over the southern Monmouth County area.
